Lake Tahoe is situated in a graben
between the fault-bounded Sierra Nevada and Carson Ranges. The Miocene-Pliocene
lava flows, erupted in conjunction with the block faulting, built a natural
dam across the northern drainage of the Truckee River and formed Lake Tahoe.
Over 60 rivers drain into Lake Tahoe, although only the Truckee River flows
out of the basin. Ultimately, the Truckee River flows eastward into Pyramid
Lake, within the Great Basin. Photographed near Stateline Lookout, Lake
