Holocene lava flows near the base of Cinder Cone are partly covered with volcanic air-fall and ash deposits, forming a colorful area called the Painted Dunes. Five lava flows have erupted from the flanks of Cinder Cone since 1567 AD. Oxidation of iron-rich minerals in the ash and cinders produced the photogenic Painted Dunes. |
